The Sister Behind Another Name

Chapter 04 - The Sister Behind Another Name

Nora spoke in a private conference room with an advocate, Ortiz, Evelyn, and Robert.

She did not want Mason present.

She had almost no memories before age nine.

Crowe Family Services records said she was abandoned under the name Rachel Stone.

She moved through four foster homes and two residential schools.

At fourteen, she discovered an old newspaper photograph of the Bennett family.

The missing child looked like her.

A caseworker told her resemblance was not evidence.

When Rachel requested DNA testing, the agency transferred her to another state.

Every transfer produced new Haven payments under Nora Bennett’s identity while Rachel continued living under another name.

Years later, Catherine found her.

She approached carefully and arranged independent DNA testing.

The test confirmed that Rachel was Nora.

Catherine planned to reveal the fraud after gathering evidence against the Crowe network.

Before she could, she died in a car crash officially attributed to a medical event.

Nora did not accuse anyone of causing it. She had no proof.

She did know Victor Shaw arrived at her apartment the next day with a guardianship order describing her as delusional.

Nora disappeared again.

For six years, she worked temporary jobs under different names while copying records from Crowe facilities.

She took a catering position at the Bellamy because the gala would gather every board member linked to the payments.

Catherine had told her about the Lantern archive before she died.

Nora planned to retrieve it herself.

Then she saw Mason escort Evelyn upstairs.

“I heard him say the incapacity petition was ready.”

Evelyn asked why Nora had not contacted her earlier.

Nora’s eyes filled but did not soften.

“Because your husband controlled your calls, your driver, your calendar, and half the lawyers who once helped our mother.”

Evelyn wanted to say she would have believed her.

She could not know that.

Mason had already convinced her that Catherine’s final investigation was an obsession.

Nora had survived by not trusting promises.

The sisters agreed to begin with evidence, not reunion.
