Chapter 11 - The Mother Who Stayed

Marissa did not become a romantic reward for Julian’s regret.

She had built a life without him.

It was not glamorous, but it was hers: a modest apartment near Lake Michigan, students who came for piano lessons, a community arts program she helped run, friends who watched Theo when work ran late, and a kitchen table scratched by years of homework and cheap dinners.

Julian entered that apartment for the first time carrying no flowers.

Marissa noticed.

“Good,” she said. “Flowers would have annoyed me.”

“I brought groceries.”

“That may annoy me more.”

Theo appeared behind her. “He brought the expensive cereal.”

Marissa sighed. “Of course he did.”

Dinner was awkward.

Julian did not know where plates were kept. Theo narrated every mistake. Marissa watched Julian struggle with a jar lid and almost smiled.

Afterward, Theo showed him a box of birthday cards he had made for an imaginary father over the years. Some had stick figures. Some had angry black scribbles. One simply said Why?

Julian sat on the bedroom floor holding the cards.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Theo shrugged, suddenly embarrassed. “I didn’t know where to send them.”

Julian looked at Marissa in the doorway.

She understood the accusation beneath the innocence. If she had tried harder, perhaps. If Julian had searched harder, certainly. If adults had been braver, the box would not exist.

Marissa sat beside Theo.

“We did the best we could with the truth we had,” she said.

Julian shook his head. “Some of us had the power to get more truth.”

That honesty stopped her from defending him.

When Julian left, he did not ask for a hug.

Theo ran after him anyway.

At the hallway door, the boy wrapped one arm around Julian’s waist.

“Next time,” Theo said, “bring normal cereal.”

Julian nodded.

“Understood.”

Marissa closed the door and leaned against it.

Trust had not returned.

But it had knocked.
