The Invitation No One Sent

Chapter 05 - The Invitation No One Sent

Elias Grant had served the Cross family for thirty-one years.

He had written trusts, buried scandals, prevented bankruptcies, and watched powerful people confuse secrecy with protection. He was sixty-eight now, tired of cleaning moral disasters with legal language.

Three weeks earlier, Julian’s father, Theodore Cross, died after a long illness.

Before his death, Theodore gave Elias a final instruction.

Find Marissa Lane. Bring her son to the gala. Do not let Celeste know.

Elias had obeyed.

The invitation came from him.

“Theodore knew?” Julian asked.

Elias stopped at the edge of the circle.

“He discovered the truth six months ago.”

Marissa’s face hardened. “And waited until now?”

“He was dying and ashamed.”

“Shame did not raise my son.”

“No,” Elias said. “It did not.”

Celeste stepped forward. “This is not the place for private allegations.”

Elias lifted the black folder.

“The privacy ended when you publicly humiliated a child.”

The guests remained silent. Several had lowered their glasses. A few began slipping phones into purses after Julian’s security aide gave them a look. The moment belonged to the family, but the scandal had already entered the room.

Julian took the folder.

Inside were copies of Marissa’s letters.

All twenty-seven.

Each envelope had been received at Cross Meridian headquarters. Each had been logged by the executive correspondence office. Each had then been redirected under Celeste’s authorization.

Julian touched the first envelope.

His name was written in Marissa’s hand.

He recognized it immediately.

A pressure built behind his ribs.

“You kept them,” he said.

Celeste shook her head. “I followed your father’s instructions.”

Elias’s expression turned cold.

“Theodore denied that before he died.”

Celeste looked toward the staircase as if the dead man might appear and support her.

He did not.

Theo moved closer to Julian, staring at the letters.

“Those are from Mom?”

Julian nodded, unable to speak.

Theo looked at Celeste.

“Why didn’t you give them to him?”

It was the simplest question in the ballroom.

Celeste had no simple answer.
