Chapter 13 - The Red Dress In Evidence

The red dress became evidence.

Not because fabric committed fraud, but because a guest’s private video captured Celeste wearing it while ordering hotel security to remove Marissa and Theo before Julian entered the ballroom.

The audio was clear.

If the boy speaks to Julian, your jobs are over.

The security supervisor gave the video to investigators after realizing Celeste planned to blame him for the incident.

Marissa watched it once.

Theo did not.

Julian asked if she wanted the recording destroyed after the legal process.

“No,” she said. “Keep it where truth cannot be rewritten.”

Celeste’s attorneys tried to negotiate.

She would return documents, resign from affiliated companies, and issue a private apology in exchange for avoiding public litigation. Julian deferred to Marissa on any terms involving her.

Marissa read the proposed apology.

It called Theo “the child.”

She handed it back.

“No.”

Celeste eventually agreed to a sworn statement admitting she intercepted letters and authorized false correspondence. Criminal charges remained possible for financial misuse and forgery. The civil settlement funded the Open Door program without attaching Celeste’s name to it.

At the final mediation, Celeste looked at Marissa.

“You won.”

Marissa felt no victory.

She thought of Theo crying on marble, birthday cards in a box, nights counting rent, and a young version of herself standing at a mailbox.

“No,” she said. “You lost control of the story. That is not the same thing.”

Celeste turned to Julian.

He did not look at her.

For years, Celeste had believed being necessary made her loved. Now the room functioned without her.

That was the consequence she understood best.

Outside the courthouse, Theo waited with Elias and a paper airplane.

He launched it badly.

It struck Julian’s chest.

“Court is boring,” Theo announced.

Julian picked up the plane.

“Most justice is.”

Theo nodded as if this confirmed a suspicion.

Then he took both Marissa’s and Julian’s hands.
