The First Recital

Chapter 16 - The First Recital

Theo’s first piano recital took place in a church basement with folding chairs and one stubborn fluorescent light.

Julian arrived twenty minutes early.

He wore no tuxedo.

Marissa had warned him.

“If you bring security inside, Theo will leave through the bathroom window.”

Julian left them outside.

He sat in the third row beside Ruth, Marissa’s elderly neighbor who had watched Theo since infancy. Ruth examined him from shoes to hair.

“You’re the missing father.”

Julian nodded. “That is one description.”

“I had less polite ones.”

“I expect so.”

When Theo walked onto the small stage, his face went pale. He saw Marissa first.

Then Julian.

He breathed.

The piece was simple, one Marissa used to play in the hotel lobby when Julian first met her. Theo missed two notes, paused, and began the measure again without running away.

Julian’s eyes filled.

Afterward, Theo accepted a paper certificate and returned to the chairs.

“Was it bad?” he asked.

Julian answered honestly. “Two notes were rebellious.”

Theo grinned.

Marissa watched them.

Julian did not make the recital about the lost years. He did not announce donations to the church. He did not buy the piano. He carried folding chairs to the storage closet because Ruth told him to.

That mattered.

Outside, light snow had begun.

Theo ran ahead with friends.

Julian and Marissa stood under the awning.

“You did well,” she said.

“At chairs?”

“At not becoming the event.”

He smiled.

“I am in training.”

Marissa looked toward their son.

Then back at Julian.

“Come for coffee.”

It was not forgiveness.

It was not romance.

May you like

It was an open door.

Julian followed her through it quietly.
