The Photograph In The Piano Bench

Chapter 08 - The Photograph In The Piano Bench

The strongest evidence was not in the black folder.

It was inside the ballroom piano bench.

Theodore Cross had hidden it there before his final hospitalization, knowing Celeste controlled his office, home, and electronic records. The hotel’s old grand piano had once belonged to Marissa. Theodore remembered that she was the only person likely to inspect the bench.

Elias found the key in Theodore’s sealed instructions.

Inside the bench were photographs, recordings, and a flash drive.

One photograph showed Celeste entering the executive mailroom with Marissa’s letters.

Another showed a private investigator following Marissa and infant Theo outside a Milwaukee clinic.

The recording was Theodore’s confession.

Julian listened with Marissa beside him the next morning.

My son,

I allowed Celeste to convince me that Marissa wanted the Cross name, not you. I approved the first settlement. I did not approve the forged custody threat or the false claim that the child was lost. Years later, I learned the boy lived. Celeste persuaded me that revealing the truth would destroy the company and your stability. I chose cowardice. There is no legal document that can make that choice honorable.

Julian paused the recording.

His face was rigid.

Marissa stared at the piano keys.

“Theodore knew Theo was alive.”

“Yes.”

“For years.”

“Yes.”

She stood so quickly the bench scraped the floor.

Julian did not stop her.

She walked across the empty ballroom, past the place where Theo had fallen, past the chandelier reflections, to the tall windows.

“I spent nights wondering whether I should write again,” she said. “I thought maybe the first twenty-seven letters had not sounded worthy enough.”

Julian approached but stayed several feet away.

“You should never have had to prove worthiness.”

Marissa looked back at him.

“Then do not turn guilt into control.”

“I won’t.”

“You will be tempted.”

“I know.”

That answer mattered more than a promise.

Behind them, Theo played one uncertain piano note.

Then another.

The sound traveled through the empty ballroom.

Marissa looked at her son.

Julian looked too.

The truth had opened the door.

What entered next would have to be chosen carefully.
