The Baby Monitor Recording

Chapter 11 - The Baby Monitor Recording
The strongest evidence did not come from the security camera.
It came from the baby monitor.
During Nora’s observation, the fetal monitor captured ambient sound in a diagnostic log. The system was not designed as surveillance, but technicians preserved audio after Maya reported the assault.
Grant’s voice was clear.
Sign it and I walk away. Refuse, and the competency papers say you imagined everything.
Then Nora:
You planned the crash at the gala stairs too?
Grant answered:
I only needed you scared enough to cooperate.
Nora had not fallen at the gala. She nearly had.
Minutes before the contraction, someone spilled oil-based decorative liquid on the marble near the private room. Security video showed Grant’s assistant placing the arrangement there. Nora stepped around it only because a waiter warned her.
The incident was meant to create an injury that could be blamed on pregnancy.
Grant’s assistant confessed after seeing the monitor transcript.
The plan was larger than a raised fist.
It included staged accidents, medical labels, and financial documents prepared in advance. Violence was only one tool among many.
Grant’s bail was revoked.
At the hearing, his attorney argued the monitor recording violated privacy. The judge ruled it could be preserved because it documented an active threat during medical care.
Nora did not celebrate.
Listening to the audio forced her to hear herself begging.
Richard sat beside her but did not touch her until she held out her hand.
“I sound weak,” she said.
“You sound trapped.”
“I knew what he was doing and still froze.”
Maya answered from across the room.
“Freezing kept you alive long enough for the door to open.”
Nora looked at the nurse.
For months afterward, she would remember that sentence whenever shame arrived.

Survival did not always look brave.
Sometimes it looked like gripping a blanket, protecting a child, and waiting through one more second.
