The First Contraction Of Truth

Chapter 05 - The First Contraction Of Truth
Nora was not in active labor.
The contractions had been triggered by stress and dehydration, but the baby remained stable. Dr. Lena Brooks ordered observation and limited visitors.
Grant was not allowed near the floor.
Richard refused to leave.
He slept in a chair outside Nora’s room because she wanted the door open but did not want anyone standing over her bed. For the first time, he learned to protect someone without occupying their space.
At dawn, Nora woke and found him watching the hallway.
“You can go home,” she said.
“I don’t know whether home is secure.”
Grant controlled the estate cameras, drivers, and staff. Evelyn managed Richard’s schedule. Dr. Bell had access to his medication. The conspiracy had turned Richard’s wealth into a cage built from trusted people.
Maya arranged a protected room for him on another floor while investigators searched his house.
Nora laughed weakly.
“The billionaire hospital founder is hiding in his own hospital.”
Richard smiled without humor.
“It appears I finally understand our privacy policy.”
The joke eased the room for one second.
Then Nora asked about the community maternity centers.
Richard admitted he had approved a “strategic review” without reading the full property proposal. Grant told him the clinics were underused. Richard relied on summaries prepared by Evelyn.
Nora knew those clinics.
They delivered thousands of babies each year. They treated women who could not pay. One stood in the neighborhood where her mother had worked as a nurse.
“You signed the first step,” she said.
Richard did not defend himself.
“Yes.”
The conspiracy required criminals.
It also required respected people willing to skim documents because trust felt efficient.
Richard asked what Nora wanted.
“Not what do I want you to do,” she corrected. “What do I want?”
He nodded.
“I want the clinic sale stopped. I want an independent medical exam for you. I want my own attorney. And I want Grant kept away from me and my child.”
Richard wrote each request down.
The habit looked corporate, but his posture was different.
He was not issuing orders.
He was learning them.
Outside, reporters gathered after news of Grant’s detention leaked.
Inside, a second contraction passed harmlessly.
May you like
Nora breathed through it.
Truth, she discovered, could hurt without destroying her.
