The Gold Dress At The Gala

Chapter 02 - The Gold Dress At The Gala
Three hours earlier, Nora stood beneath a chandelier wearing the gold dress Grant had chosen for her.
The annual Whitmore Foundation gala filled the hospital’s new atrium with donors, surgeons, politicians, and executives. Every table displayed photographs of mothers and newborns helped by Whitmore community clinics.
Grant smiled beneath them while negotiating to close those same clinics.
Nora discovered the truth by accident.
She entered a private consultation room looking for a place to sit when she heard Grant speaking beyond the half-open door. With him were Chief Financial Officer Evelyn Drake and board member Colin Marsh.
“The maternity properties are worth four times more as private developments,” Grant said. “Once my father is under medical supervision, I control his vote.”
Evelyn asked about Nora.
“She signs after the baby comes,” Grant replied. “If she refuses, we document postpartum instability and take temporary authority.”
Nora stopped breathing.
The Whitmore family trust gave the parents of Richard’s first grandchild a significant voting block, but only while both remained medically competent. Grant had spent months describing Nora as emotional, forgetful, and fragile to their family doctor.
Now she understood why.
She opened the recording app on her phone.
Grant continued.
A private physician had been adding a sedative to Richard’s evening medication. The effects would resemble early dementia. At Friday’s hearing, Grant planned to become acting chairman. The clinic sale would be approved before anyone requested another evaluation.
Nora recorded seven minutes.
Then the baby kicked hard.
She gasped.
The room fell silent.
Grant opened the door.
For one terrible second, husband and wife stared at each other.
Nora ran.
She crossed the ballroom, but a contraction tightened across her abdomen. Guests turned as she grabbed a table. Grant reached her first, smiling for everyone while squeezing her arm hard enough to leave marks.
“My wife needs rest,” he announced.
Nora tried to call Richard.
Grant took the phone.
During the ambulance ride, Nurse Maya Chen noticed Nora’s fear whenever Grant leaned close. At the hospital, Maya asked privately whether Nora felt safe.
Nora whispered Richard’s number from memory.
Maya called him.
Then she returned the phone Grant thought he had taken.

Nora hid it beneath the hospital blanket.
And waited for the glass doors to open.
