The Trial Behind The Glass

Chapter 14 - The Trial Behind The Glass
Grant’s criminal trial began six months later.
The courtroom used a glass partition around the defendant area after he threatened a witness during transport. The image reminded Nora of the hospital doors: transparent, visible, no longer his to control.
Charges included assault, conspiracy, fraud, attempted medical coercion, elder abuse, witness intimidation, and financial theft.
Evidence arrived layer by layer.
The gala recording.
The altered medication.
The baby monitor audio.
The staged spill.
The forged competency plan.
The hidden clinic commissions.
The hospital security footage.
Evelyn testified against Grant in exchange for a reduced sentence. Grant’s assistant testified. Dr. Bell invoked his rights and faced a separate case.
Grant watched Nora throughout her testimony.
His expression shifted between sorrow, accusation, and the private look that once made her question herself.
She kept speaking.
The defense asked why she remained married if she was afraid.
Nora answered, “Fear does not make a person leave on schedule. Sometimes it makes the dangerous person seem like the only one who understands the danger.”
The defense showed photographs of Nora smiling beside Grant.
She did not deny the happiness.
“I loved him,” she said. “That is why the truth took longer, not why it is false.”
Richard testified last.
Grant looked at his father for the first time.
“You chose her,” he said.
Richard’s voice broke.
“I chose the truth too late.”
The jury convicted Grant on every major count.
Before sentencing, Grant called the hospital incident a single moment of panic.
The judge looked at the months of records.
“A fist was not the beginning,” she said. “It was the moment your system became visible.”
Grant received a long prison sentence and permanent prohibition from managing medical or family trusts.
As officers led him away, he looked toward Richard.

His father did not turn away.
He also did not save him.
