Before The Knock

Chapter 01 - Before The Knock
Anna Whitmore had stopped trusting quiet afternoons.
Quiet used to mean laundry folding, cartoons humming from the living room, coffee cooling on the counter while five-year-old Noah built battles with plastic toy soldiers on the rug. Quiet used to mean her husband, Captain Daniel Whitmore, would call from whatever base the Army had sent him to and say, “I’ve got seven minutes, so tell me everything.”
Now quiet meant waiting.
The deployment had stretched longer than expected. Daniel’s messages had become shorter, not because he loved them less, but because war turned time into something rationed. He sent photos without locations. Audio clips when signal failed. Once, he mailed Noah a tiny plastic soldier from a base exchange with a note that said, Keep this guy on duty until I get home.
Noah carried it everywhere.
That afternoon, the sky over their suburban street was gray and low. Rain had dampened the porch mat. The house smelled like coffee and the apple soap Daniel teased her for buying in bulk. Anna wore a simple black dress because she had been at a school meeting earlier, not because she expected grief.
She expected Daniel.
Not officially. No date had been promised. But that morning she woke with a strange certainty that he was near. She changed the sheets. She opened the curtains. She made coffee strong, the way he liked it, then laughed at herself for being sentimental.
Noah noticed.
“Is Daddy coming today?” he asked.
Anna touched his hair. “I don’t know, baby.”
“But maybe?”
“Maybe.”
That word was dangerous, but she gave it to him anyway.
At 2:14 p.m., tires whispered against the wet street outside. Anna looked through the front window and saw a dark military vehicle stop at the curb.
Her heart lifted before her mind understood.
Noah ran for the door.
Anna picked up her coffee mug and followed, smiling already, ready to tell Daniel he looked terrible, ready to forgive the whole war for ending at her porch.

Then she opened the door.
And saw the folded flag.
