The Last Message

Chapter 06 - The Last Message

Major Miller carried a small envelope in his breast pocket.

He did not offer it immediately.

Some things arrive better in sequence. First the presence. Then the flag. Then the official words. Then, only when the family could breathe enough to hold another truth, the personal item.

Anna sat on the edge of the sofa with the folded flag in her lap. Noah sat beside her, toy soldier still in hand, knees pulled close. The honor guards had stepped back onto the porch, visible through the open door but silent. The storm-soft afternoon light made the living room look unreal.

Miller stood near the threshold.

“Captain Whitmore left a message,” he said.

Anna looked up.

Her face changed in a way that made Miller want to apologize for every procedure ever invented.

“A message?”

“Yes, ma’am. Written. He asked that it be given to you only if…”

He did not finish.

He did not have to.

Anna reached for it, then stopped. Her hand hovered in the air, trembling.

“What if I can’t read it?” she whispered.

“Then you don’t read it today.”

Noah looked at the envelope. “Is it from Daddy?”

“Yes,” Miller said.

“Can it talk?”

Anna almost laughed. The sound hurt too much to become real.

“No, baby.”

Noah looked disappointed. Then thoughtful. “But Mom can make it talk.”

Miller turned slightly away to give them privacy.

Anna opened the envelope.

The letter was short. Daniel had known her well enough not to leave pages of unbearable bravery.

Annie,

If this letter is in your hands, I am home in the hardest way. I am sorry. I love you. Tell Noah I kept my promise because every brave thing I did was to get back to you both, even if I could only come back as honor, memory, and love. Don’t let silence become a room you live in. Let people help.

Daniel

Anna pressed the paper to her mouth.

Noah leaned against her.

“What does it say?”

Anna looked at the flag.

Then at the boy.

May you like

“That Daddy loves us.”

Noah nodded like he already knew.
