The Porch Mat

Chapter 12 - The Porch Mat

The porch mat stayed damp for days.

Rain came and went. Neighbors stepped over it. Delivery people placed packages beside it. Anna considered throwing it away because it was the mat the officers had stood on, the mat that held the shape of the last moment before knowledge entered the house.

Noah objected.

“That’s where Daddy came home,” he said.

Anna did not know how to answer.

So the mat stayed.

By spring, the dampness dried. Dirt gathered in its grooves. A corner curled. Life had the audacity to keep using things grief marked sacred.

One afternoon, Noah sat on the porch with Private Rocket and the folded flag visible through the open door behind him. Anna watched from the hallway.

He placed the toy soldier on the mat.

“Guard this spot,” he said.

Anna stepped outside and sat beside him.

“What are you thinking about?”

Noah shrugged. “If Daddy came home as a flag, does he know I wanted him as Daddy?”

Anna felt the question pass through her whole body.

“Yes,” she said. “He knows.”

“How?”

“Because he wanted that too.”

Noah looked at the street. “Then why didn’t he?”

There it was. The question no honor ceremony could answer.

Anna pulled him gently against her side.

“Because sometimes people do everything right and something still hurts us.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No.”

“Can I be mad?”

“Yes.”

“At Daddy?”

Anna closed her eyes.

The honest answer was hard. The right answer was harder.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Even at Daddy.”

Noah leaned into her.

“I’m mad he kept his promise wrong.”

Anna kissed his hair.

“Me too.”

The porch held them both.

No flags. No officers. No speeches.

Just the truth, finally allowed to be five years old.
