The Ceremony At School

Chapter 16 - The Ceremony At School

The school held a small Veterans Day ceremony in November.

Anna almost did not go.

Noah wanted to.

“He’s my dad,” he said.

So they went.

The auditorium smelled like floor wax and construction paper. Children sang off-key. A teacher gave a speech that was kind and too long. Photos of service members appeared on a screen, but Anna looked down when Daniel’s turn came. She could not bear the sudden publicness of his face.

Noah squeezed her hand.

“Look,” he whispered.

She did.

Daniel’s photo showed him smiling in uniform, one eyebrow raised like he was about to make fun of the photographer. Beneath it, no readable text was shown from their distance, just the shape of his name and service blurred by tears.

Noah stood when the teacher invited children of service members to be recognized.

Anna’s heart stopped.

He walked to the front holding Private Rocket.

Small. Serious. Brave in the only kind that counts.

Other children stood with him. Some had parents deployed. Some had grandparents who served. Some, like Noah, carried absence.

When he returned, he climbed into Anna’s lap even though he was almost too big.

“Was Daddy proud?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said.

“How do you know?”

Anna looked at Daniel’s photo.

“Because I am.”

Noah rested his head under her chin.

For the first time in months, public honor did not feel like theft.

It felt like a room making space.

Not enough.

But some.
