The Flag Enters The House

Chapter 05 - The Flag Enters The House
Anna accepted the flag with both hands because dropping it felt impossible.
The fabric was heavier than she expected. Or perhaps her arms had become weak. Major Miller released it only when he was certain she had it. The two honor guards remained outside, their faces solemn, their boots still on the damp porch mat. They did not cross into the home. The threshold mattered. The house still belonged to Anna, to Noah, to the absence standing behind them.
The broken mug pieces stayed on the entry floor.
Coffee had spread into a thin brown crescent near the door. Anna noticed it because shock sharpens useless details. The chip in one piece looked like a crescent moon. Daniel loved the moon because Noah loved space. That thought nearly broke her in half.
Noah’s small body pressed into her side.
“Is this Daddy’s?” he asked.
Anna looked down at the folded flag in her arms.
How do you tell a child that cloth has become a man?
“It’s from Daddy,” she said.
Major Miller’s eyes softened, but he did not correct her.
Good man, Anna thought wildly. Cruel job. Good man.
He asked if she wanted to sit. She nodded but did not move. Her knees no longer felt like hers. Her hand moved automatically to Noah’s hair, smoothing it back the way Daniel did before bedtime.
Miller spoke quietly.
There had been an incident. Daniel had acted with courage. He had protected two members of his unit during an evacuation. He was not alone. He had been respected. He had been loved.
Anna heard fragments.
Courage.
Protected.
Not alone.
Noah heard only one thing.
“Evacuation means coming home,” he said.
The room froze.
Miller closed his eyes briefly.
Anna pulled Noah closer.
“Yes,” she whispered, because she finally understood Daniel’s impossible sentence. “And Daddy came home the only way he could.”
Noah stared at the flag.

The toy soldier rested against its folded edge.
For the first time, confusion began turning into fear.
