The Locket On The Marble Floor

Chapter 01 - The Locket On The Marble Floor

The Langford Foundation gala had been designed to make wealth look like virtue.

Crystal chandeliers burned above a ballroom of cream walls, polished marble, and black-tie guests who applauded whenever a camera turned in their direction. At the center of it all stood Victoria Langford in a champagne-beaded gown, smiling beside a banner no camera in this story would ever show clearly.

Mara Ellis had been working since noon.

At twenty-two, she was one of the youngest banquet servers on the floor, dressed in a pale gray service jacket with black trim, dark trousers, and shoes that pinched by the second hour. She had learned to move around wealthy people without becoming visible. Refill. Step back. Apologize even when someone else bumped the tray.

Then Victoria stopped her near the dance floor.

“You,” she said, staring at the silver chain near Mara’s collar. “Where did you get that?”

Mara instinctively covered the antique locket beneath her jacket.

“It belonged to my mother.”

Victoria’s expression hardened. “That piece belonged to my family.”

Guests turned.

Mara’s face drained. “No, ma’am. I’ve had it since I was a baby.”

Victoria grabbed the edge of Mara’s jacket, not striking her, but close enough to make the young woman stumble backward. Mara’s hand flew to her chest. The chain snapped.

The locket hit the marble and sprang open.

A delicate melody trembled from its tiny mechanism.

Victoria stopped breathing.

She knew that tune.

Twenty-two years earlier, in a private hospital room, she had wound the same locket and tucked it into her newborn daughter’s blanket before doctors told her the baby had died.

Mara dropped to her knees, reaching for the only thing her late foster mother had left her.

Victoria reached it first.

Her manicured fingers shook around the scratched silver case. Inside was a faded infant photograph and one engraved date.

The date her daughter was born.

Around them, the gala went silent.

Victoria looked at Mara’s tearful face and saw her own eyes staring back.

“Who gave you this?” she whispered.

May you like

Mara swallowed.

“My mother said it was the only thing I arrived with.”
