The Rose Ellis Center

Chapter 18 - The Rose Ellis Center

The new center did not carry the Langford name.

Mara insisted.

It was called the Rose Ellis Center for Family Records and Advocacy. It helped adults access sealed birth information, offered independent counsel to vulnerable mothers, and funded investigations when hospitals or agencies claimed records were missing.

Victoria provided money without controlling the board.

Daniel trained researchers in interviewing and documentation.

Evelyn volunteered once, then stepped away when survivors said her presence complicated their safety.

Samuel built legal firewalls to prevent any family donor from influencing cases.

Mara worked there three days a week while completing a degree in social work.

On opening morning, no ribbon was cut. Mara hated giant scissors.

Instead, the first client entered through a plain glass door and sat with an advocate who said, “You do not have to prove your pain to deserve records.”

Mara watched from the hallway.

Rose would have liked that sentence.

Victoria stood nearby in a simple cream suit, no cameras invited. She had become quieter over the year. Not smaller. More careful about the space her power occupied.

“May I ask you something?” Victoria said.

Mara nodded.

“When you were little, what did you want to be?”

“A bus driver.”

Victoria blinked. “Why?”

“They knew where everything went.”

Victoria laughed softly.

Then the laugh became tears.

Mara did not rush to comfort her.

After a moment, she placed one hand on Victoria’s arm.

Not forgiveness completed.

Not motherhood restored.

Just contact chosen freely.

The silver locket rested beneath Mara’s blouse on the repaired chain. It no longer felt like evidence every time she wore it.

Sometimes it felt like music.
