The Criminal Case

Chapter 14 - The Criminal Case

The state attorney general opened an investigation within a week.

Margaret was not arrested dramatically at the gala. Real accountability moved through subpoenas, interviews, account freezes, and boxes of records carried out of offices by people wearing practical shoes.

Dr. Avery’s estate surrendered private journals.

One entry described Margaret’s instruction plainly: “Infant must disappear before trust notification.”

Evelyn Price returned to Chicago to testify.

She was seventy, thin, and terrified of Mara.

“I have imagined you hating me every day,” she said.

They met in Samuel’s office with attorneys present.

Mara studied the woman who had lifted her from one future and placed her into another.

“Did Rose know I was stolen?”

“Not at first. I told her the mother had surrendered you. Later, when I learned the truth, I tried to contact her.”

“Why didn’t you go to police?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled. “Margaret owned the doctor, the clinic board, and half the people who decided whether I kept my license.”

“So you were afraid.”

“Yes.”

Mara leaned back.

She had begun to see fear as the invisible accomplice in every chapter of her life.

Margaret’s fear of losing control.

Victoria’s fear of questioning grief.

Rose’s fear of losing Mara.

Evelyn’s fear of power.

Daniel’s fear that anger had become obsession.

Fear explained many choices.

It did not erase them.

Margaret was charged with conspiracy, falsifying medical records, fraud, and obstruction. Her attorneys promised a fight.

Victoria asked Mara whether she felt relieved.

“No,” Mara said.

“Why not?”

“Because a court can punish what she did. It cannot give anyone back their childhood.”

Victoria sat with that.

She was learning not to offer solutions to pain simply because money had taught her every problem should submit to resources.

Sometimes the only respectful response was to remain.
