Margaret’s Offer

Chapter 10 - Margaret’s Offer

Margaret requested a private meeting at noon.

Mara arrived in her banquet uniform.

She did it deliberately.

The Langford boardroom was all dark wood, silent windows, and chairs designed to make visitors feel smaller. Margaret sat at the head of the table in ivory wool, composed again.

“You look like Victoria at that age,” she said.

Mara remained standing. “I look like myself.”

Margaret gestured to a chair.

Mara did not sit.

A slim folder waited on the table. Margaret pushed it forward.

Inside was an offer: ten million dollars, a trust, a home, education, complete medical coverage, and confidentiality.

Mara read only the first page.

“You think this is generous?”

“I think it is practical.”

“You stole twenty-two years.”

“I prevented a scandal that would have destroyed Victoria.”

“You destroyed her anyway.”

Margaret’s eyes hardened. “You know nothing about the world she was born into.”

“I know what you turned it into.”

Margaret stood.

For the first time, she looked less like a queen and more like an old woman defending a terrible decision because regret would collapse her identity.

“Your mother was weak,” she said. “Daniel was ambitious. The company was vulnerable. I made the only decision that protected the family.”

Mara’s hands trembled, but her voice did not.

“I was the family.”

Margaret looked away.

The sentence landed.

Mara closed the folder and slid it back.

“I don’t want your silence money.”

“What do you want?”

Mara thought of Rose’s apartment, Victoria’s sealed nursery, Daniel’s returned letters, the wet-eyed server staring from every reflective ballroom surface.

“I want every record opened. Every person named. Every child placement your doctors arranged investigated.”

Margaret went still.

There it was.

Not one stolen baby.

A system.

Mara saw the fear.

“How many?” she whispered.

May you like

Margaret said nothing.

That silence changed the case again.
