The Board Vote

Chapter 12 - The Board Vote

The emergency board meeting lasted three hours.

Margaret arrived with seven votes.

Victoria had five.

Samuel had no vote but brought evidence.

Mara waited outside because the board tried to exclude her as a nonmember. She sat on a marble bench wearing Rose’s locket on Victoria’s matching chain.

Daniel joined her with vending-machine coffee.

“Want to know what they’re saying?” he asked.

“No.”

“That’s healthy.”

“I’m lying.”

He smiled faintly.

Inside, Margaret argued that Victoria’s emotional vulnerability threatened fiduciary stability. She described Mara as a possible fraud despite the independent DNA test. She called the clinic evidence incomplete.

Then Samuel played Evelyn Price’s recording.

One board member left the room to be sick.

Another asked how many children were involved.

Margaret blamed dead doctors, rogue staff, and administrative errors.

Victoria stood.

For years, she had spoken in boardrooms by sharpening emotion into numbers. This time she did the opposite.

She told them about the empty bassinet.

The sealed nursery.

The locket on the marble floor.

The server she accused because power had trained her to interpret poverty as theft.

“I became my mother’s best evidence,” Victoria said. “I treated a young woman as disposable before learning she was mine. If this foundation survives, it cannot survive unchanged.”

The vote ended six to six.

Margaret smiled.

Then the board secretary entered with a proxy previously controlled by Margaret but legally transferred upon confirmation of Victoria’s living heir.

Mara’s proxy.

Everyone looked toward the closed doors.

Samuel opened them.

Mara stood.

“I vote to release the records,” she said.

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, the stolen child controlled a piece of the future Margaret had stolen her to protect.
