The Boy Beneath the Chandelier

Chapter 01 - The Boy Beneath the Chandelier
Oliver Bennett had never seen a room large enough to make a child feel invisible.
The Ashford mansion foyer rose around him in dark wood, twin staircases, crystal chandeliers, and a black marble floor polished so perfectly that his frightened face appeared beneath his shoes. Men in black suits stood along the walls without speaking. At the center of the foyer, Victoria Ashford leaned toward him in a sapphire evening gown, her diamonds bright and her expression colder than the stone.
Oliver was nine, small for his age, with untidy blond hair, a pale blue shirt, khaki trousers, and hands that would not stop trembling. He had come carrying the only things his mother left him: a wooden music box, a photograph, and a sealed cream envelope.
Victoria had knocked them from his hands.
The box opened when it struck the floor. A silver locket rolled beside the photograph of Oliver’s mother, Elena, smiling next to a younger man Oliver did not recognize. The envelope slid across the marble and stopped near Victoria’s heel.
“You stole this,” she said.
“No.” Oliver wrapped both arms around himself. “Mom told me to bring it here.”
“Your mother was a liar.”
The words hurt more than the shove to his hands. Oliver crouched, trying to reach the photograph, but Victoria stepped between him and the scattered keepsakes.
“You do not belong in this house.”
The tall front doors opened behind them.
A clean-cut man in a black suit entered carrying a leather briefcase. His name was Nathan Cole, attorney for the Ashford estate. He stopped when he saw the crying boy on the floor and Victoria standing over him.
Nathan crossed the foyer without hesitation. He placed the briefcase down, helped Oliver stand, and moved one protective arm around his shoulders.
“What happened?” he asked.
Victoria lifted her chin. “The boy was stealing.”
Nathan looked at the open music box, the photograph, and the cream envelope on the floor.
Then he looked at Oliver’s face.
“No,” he said quietly. “He came for the reading.”
Victoria’s confidence faltered.

Nathan picked up the photograph. The color left his face.
The young man beside Elena was him.
