The DNA Result

Chapter 09 - The DNA Result
The DNA test returned two days later.
Nathan refused every shortcut. No private family laboratory, no Ashford physician, no sealed internal process Victoria could accuse him of manipulating. Samples were collected under court supervision and tested by two independent facilities.
Both results were the same.
Nathan Cole was Oliver Bennett’s biological father.
The judge read the finding in a private hearing because Oliver’s identity had already attracted too much attention. Victoria sat with three attorneys and looked at the table. Nathan sat beside Oliver, who wore the same pale blue shirt because he said it was the last one his mother bought.
When the judge asked whether Oliver understood, he said, “It means he should have known me, but someone stopped him.”
The room went still.
The judge looked at Victoria.
Her attorney objected.
The judge overruled him.
Nathan was granted temporary guardianship with mandatory family counseling and independent trust oversight. Oliver’s longtime neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez, was included in the transition plan because she had cared for him during Elena’s illness and represented the only stable home connection he had left.
Nathan thanked the court.
Oliver asked, “Do I have to call him Dad now?”
The judge almost smiled. “No one can order that.”
In the hallway, reporters waited beyond closed doors. Nathan used a private exit, not to hide Oliver’s legitimacy, but to protect his childhood.
In the car, Oliver held Elena’s music box on his lap.
“Did Mom know the test would say yes?”
“She believed it.”
“Did you?”
Nathan considered lying.
“I hoped.”
Oliver traced the magnolia carving.
“Hope is scary.”
“Yes.”
“Because it can be wrong.”
“Yes.”
Oliver looked out the window.
Then he said, very quietly, “I’m glad it wasn’t.”
Nathan turned toward the glass so the boy would not feel watched while saying something vulnerable.
His reflection showed a man smiling and crying at the same time.

It looked ridiculous.
It also looked like a father.
