Elena’s Last Instruction

Chapter 03 - Elena’s Last Instruction
The envelope contained a letter and a hospital bracelet.
Nathan unfolded the letter with deliberate care. Oliver stood beside him, one hand clutching the music box. Victoria remained several feet away, her posture rigid, as if stillness could prevent the words from existing.
Nathan read silently at first.
Elena wrote that she had been ill longer than anyone knew. She wrote that she had hidden Oliver because Victoria had threatened to use the Ashford name to take him away. She wrote that Henry Ashford had contacted her before his death and asked to meet his grandson. She had refused until she could guarantee Oliver’s safety.
Then came the sentence that made Nathan sit down on the lowest stair.
Oliver is your son.
The foyer seemed to lose all sound.
Nathan read it again. The letters did not change.
Elena explained that she discovered she was pregnant after Nathan left Chicago for a legal fellowship. Victoria intercepted his letters and convinced Elena that Nathan had chosen his career over her. By the time Elena learned the truth, Nathan was engaged to someone else, and Henry had already threatened to disown her if she brought scandal into the family.
She raised Oliver alone.
Not because Nathan rejected him.
Because Victoria made sure neither parent knew where to look.
Nathan lifted his eyes to the boy. The same gray-blue eyes looked back at him. The same small crease appeared between Oliver’s brows when he was afraid.
Oliver whispered, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Nathan could not answer immediately. He had argued in federal court, negotiated billion-dollar settlements, and delivered death notices to families. Nothing had prepared him for a child waiting to learn whether the truth would become another abandonment.
He knelt at Oliver’s level.
“Your mother says I am your father.”
Oliver stared.
Victoria laughed once, too sharply. “A dead woman’s letter is not evidence.”
Nathan looked at the hospital bracelet. A patient number was printed beneath a sealed DNA laboratory reference.
Elena had planned for Victoria’s denial.
The letter ended with one request:
Believe him before he is forced to prove he deserves you.
Nathan reached for Oliver’s hand but stopped before touching him.
May you like
Oliver made the choice.
He placed his trembling hand inside Nathan’s.
