A Father in One Afternoon

Chapter 08 - A Father in One Afternoon
Nathan did not know how to become a father between lunch and sunset.
Oliver remained beside him as investigators were called, the independent trustees notified, and Victoria’s authority over the mansion formally suspended. Adults spoke in low voices around the child, turning his life into terms: custody, guardianship, paternity, beneficiary, trauma.
Nathan hated every word for being necessary.
He brought Oliver to the small breakfast room away from the library. A housekeeper set down hot chocolate and toast. Oliver stared at the cup without drinking.
“Are you going to make me live here?” he asked.
Nathan sat across from him. “No one is making you decide anything today.”
“Are you going to take me?”
The question held fear, not hope.
Nathan understood. Adults had already treated Oliver like property—something to hide, claim, inherit through, or use against someone else.
“I would like to know you,” Nathan said. “I would like to be responsible for you if you want that. But I will not pretend one letter gives me the right to rearrange your whole life.”
Oliver picked at the edge of the napkin.
“Mom said my dad was brave.”
Nathan’s throat tightened. “She was generous.”
“She said he didn’t know.”
“I didn’t.”
“Would you have come?”
“Yes.”
The answer arrived before caution.
Oliver looked at him sharply.
Nathan did not soften it. “I would have come.”
The boy looked down again. A tear fell onto the table.
Nathan moved his hand halfway across the space between them and stopped.
Oliver placed his own hand over it.
“Can I call you Nathan?”
“Of course.”
“Even if the test says you’re my dad?”
Nathan smiled through the pressure behind his eyes.
“Especially then.”
Outside the room, lawyers and security officers moved through the mansion Victoria once ruled without challenge.
Inside, fatherhood began without ceremony.
