The Driver’s Testimony

Chapter 11 - The Driver’s Testimony

Samuel Pike testified that Elena accepted two hundred thousand dollars from the Ashford family and agreed never to make a claim on the estate.

He spoke calmly. He remembered the weather, the hotel lobby, the color of Elena’s coat. He said she signed a receipt and left with the baby.

Victoria’s lawyers displayed a copy.

Nathan studied it from across the courtroom. Elena’s signature looked convincing. Too convincing. Every curve matched the handwriting on letters she wrote years earlier, without the changes illness and stress would have caused.

During cross-examination, Nathan asked Pike which hand Elena used.

“Right.”

Elena had broken her right wrist in a car accident two days before the alleged meeting. Medical records showed it immobilized in a cast.

Pike adjusted his answer.

“Maybe she signed left-handed.”

Nathan displayed the receipt enlarged. The signature slanted with confident right-handed pressure.

Then he asked about the hotel.

Pike described a lobby renovation completed the following year.

The witness began sweating.

Finally, Nathan opened Elena’s music box and removed the silver locket. Inside was a memory card Oliver had never known existed. Forensic technicians recovered photographs automatically uploaded from Elena’s old phone. One showed Pike delivering the blank receipt book to Victoria three years after Elena disappeared.

The courtroom changed.

Pike looked at Victoria.

That glance ended the performance.

He admitted she paid him to create a backdated document. In exchange, prosecutors agreed only to consider cooperation; no promises were made.

Oliver was not in court. Nathan had refused to let him watch adults lie about his mother for entertainment. He waited at Mrs. Alvarez’s apartment, building a model airplane and pretending not to worry.

Nathan arrived that evening with pizza.

“Well?” Oliver asked.

“The lie broke.”

“Did you break it?”

“Your mother did.”

Nathan placed the locket on the table.

Oliver opened it and saw Elena’s tiny photograph inside.

“She kept saving me,” he whispered.

Nathan sat beside him.

“Yes.”

Even after death, Elena had left lights along the path home.
