The Board Learns Her Name

Chapter 12 - The Board Learns Her Name

The board call began at nine.

Andre sat at the small desk near the window. Maya remained off-camera on the sofa because she wanted to hear how he described her when Evelyn was not in the room to translate.

He did not use soft language.

“Evelyn Hart entered my private hotel suite without my wife’s consent while I was away. She confronted Maya, attempted to provoke an emotional response, and referred to my wife’s influence over me as a problem. We have a recording. We have access logs. Effective immediately, she is suspended pending independent review.”

A board member cleared his throat. “Andre, is this possibly a domestic misunderstanding?”

“No.”

The word was flat.

Maya looked down at her hands.

For months, she had been afraid that when the truth finally came, it would still be made smaller by men who preferred business vocabulary to human harm.

Andre did not let them.

The legal chair requested preservation of the recording and all related communications. Andre agreed. Another member asked about acquisition risk.

Andre’s answer was colder.

“The risk is keeping someone in power who believed manipulating my pregnant wife was a business strategy.”

Silence followed.

Maya’s eyes filled.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because for the first time, Andre used the full size of the room to defend the truth instead of asking Maya to compress it into proof he could manage.

When the call ended, he turned toward her.

“She’s out for now.”

Maya nodded.

“Good,” she said.

The word felt heavy, but real.
