Chapter 18 - What Changed

Andre changed the company because systems had helped Evelyn.

No executive adviser could access family lodging, medical schedules, personal calendars, or infant-related communications without explicit written approval from both Andre and Maya. Household staff no longer reported through corporate channels. Security was retrained. The board established an ethics procedure for personal boundary violations by senior employees.

Some directors thought the changes excessive.

Andre did not care.

Then he changed himself.

That mattered more.

He stopped asking Maya to justify discomfort with courtroom precision. When she said something felt wrong, he asked what she needed before he asked what happened. He attended therapy without turning it into proof of virtue. He reduced travel. He learned Grace’s routines. He learned that being near his family was not the same as being available to them.

Maya watched all of it with cautious eyes.

She did not reward effort too quickly.

Trust rushed is trust endangered.

But slowly, her body began to believe the house was safer. She stopped tensing when Andre’s phone lit up. She stopped expecting Evelyn’s name to return inside every business emergency. She laughed more easily. She slept deeper.

One evening, Andre found her rocking Grace near the window.

“Do you think we’re okay?” he asked.

Maya looked at him for a long time.

“No,” she said honestly. “But I think we’re becoming okay.”

Andre nodded.

For once, he did not ask how long it would take.

He simply stayed.
