The Spill

Chapter 04 - The Spill

The tea fell because Maya stepped back too quickly.

It was not dramatic. No shattered glass, no scream, no violence. Just a white porcelain cup tipping from the edge of the marble table, dark herbal tea spilling across the cream carpet like a stain the room would remember.

Maya reached for balance, one hand still pressed to her belly. Her knees weakened, and she lowered herself awkwardly beside the bed before she could fall. The movement frightened her more than she wanted Evelyn to see.

Evelyn saw everything.

Instead of helping, she looked down at the spreading mark and gave a small satisfied breath.

“This,” she said, “is exactly the problem.”

Maya’s eyes filled. “You wanted me upset.”

“I wanted Andre to see what happens when people tell you no.”

The words landed with almost physical force.

Maya’s body shook. She hated that it did. She hated that pregnancy made every emotion feel visible, every fear heavier, every breath harder to control. Evelyn had chosen the battlefield well.

“Get out,” Maya whispered.

Evelyn leaned closer. “Say it louder.”

Maya understood the trap completely then. Evelyn did not need to hurt her. She only needed to provoke her into sounding like someone who could be dismissed.

So Maya stayed low beside the bed, one hand near her belly, tears sliding down her face in silence.

Evelyn’s gaze moved toward the open doorway as if she expected Andre to arrive eventually, after she had shaped the room to her advantage.

But Andre arrived too soon for her.

The door shifted.

A suitcase wheel clicked softly against the threshold.

Maya looked up and saw him standing there in a navy suit, his face changing before he spoke.

“Please,” she whispered. “Just listen.”

Evelyn turned, already preparing her story.
