Chapter 15 - Evelyn Without the Room

Evelyn did not collapse publicly.

She was too disciplined for that. She hired counsel, released no statement, and allowed people to speculate while she prepared her defense. She claimed the recording lacked context. She claimed concern for Andre’s wellbeing. She claimed Maya had misinterpreted professional boundaries through the stress of late pregnancy.

But Evelyn had lost the thing she needed most.

Access.

Her building pass was suspended. Her company accounts were frozen pending review. Hotel security was instructed not to admit her. Staff were notified that any contact from her should be documented and forwarded to counsel.

For the first time in six years, she could not enter Andre’s day through a side door.

That drove her to one final mistake.

She sent Maya a message from a private number.

You have no idea what he sacrifices for you.

Maya read it once.

Her hand did not shake this time.

She forwarded it to Andre, counsel, and the investigator.

Then she blocked the number.

For months, Evelyn had made Maya feel as if every response needed to be careful, every silence dangerous, every boundary negotiable. Now Maya understood something simple: a message did not deserve her emotional labor just because it was cruel.

Andre came into the room a minute later.

“I saw it,” he said.

Maya nodded. “I handled it.”

He stopped himself from taking over.

“Yes,” he said. “You did.”

That small restraint mattered more than another grand promise.
