Returning to the Suite

Chapter 17 - Returning to the Suite

Three months after Grace was born, Maya asked to return to the hotel suite.

Andre offered another hotel, another city, another view.

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t want that room to stay bigger than me.”

So they went back.

The suite looked almost identical: city lights beyond glass, cream carpet, white bed, marble table, warm lamp, soft curtains. The spill was gone. The air smelled faintly of fresh linen. Nothing in the room confessed what it had once held.

Maya entered carrying Grace against her chest.

Andre followed with the black suitcase, this time stuffed with diapers, bottles, blankets, and a ridiculous plush giraffe he claimed Grace respected.

Maya paused beside the bed.

For a moment, she saw herself on the carpet again. Lavender dress. Trembling hand. Evelyn standing over her. The dark phone beside the lamp.

Then Grace stirred.

Maya looked down at her daughter’s peaceful face and breathed.

She walked to the marble bedside table and placed her phone beside the lamp.

Andre watched quietly.

“You want it there?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Recording?”

“No.”

He nodded.

That was all.

No speech. No attempt to turn the moment into redemption. Just respect.

Maya sat on the edge of the white bed with Grace in her arms.

The room felt tense for a minute.

Then Grace sneezed.

May you like

Maya laughed.

And just like that, the suite became only a room again.
