Chapter 13 - The Board Watches

Whitmore Holdings had survived recessions, lawsuits, construction collapses, and one hotel fire.

It had never held a board vote beside crushed roses.

Arthur Bell requested an emergency session in the ballroom. The remaining directors agreed. Samuel’s voting authority gave him the right to preside, but he asked Marcus to chair temporarily while Dr. Park examined his injured knee.

Lucas objected.

“You cannot run a public company from a family spectacle.”

Arthur looked at him.

“You planned to approve a six-billion-dollar merger during your engagement party.”

Lucas had no answer.

The board reviewed the Arden proposal. Hidden fees would enrich Lucas personally. Hospital closures had been disguised as “asset optimization.” Pension obligations would transfer into a subsidiary likely to fail. The mansion trust would guarantee private debt.

Celeste sat apart, listening to her family name become evidence.

She called her father from the ballroom. The conversation lasted under a minute.

“You used me,” she said.

Whatever he answered made her remove the call without goodbye.

The board suspended Lucas and Evelyn from all executive roles. Their voting shares were frozen under the covenant. The merger was rejected unanimously.

Samuel returned from the side room using a cane, not because he was weak, but because Dr. Park insisted dignity included accepting support.

The board stood.

He gestured for them to sit.

“I do not want applause,” he said. “I want accountability.”

He announced an independent audit of every company decision made during his guardianship. Employees dismissed for questioning the diagnosis would be offered reinstatement and compensation. The private clinic contract would be referred to regulators. Hospital protections would be strengthened beyond family control.

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“You’re giving away power.”

Samuel looked at him.

“No. I am making it harder to steal.”

Outside the ballroom, guests still waited for news. Inside, the future Lucas planned disappeared through formal motions, recorded votes, and calm voices.

Power did not shift with shouting.

It shifted when witnesses stopped looking away.
