Before The Gala

Chapter 02 - Before The Gala

Three hours earlier, Lucas Whitmore had stood beneath the crystal chandelier rehearsing gratitude.

He thanked the foundation board for believing in the next generation. He thanked his mother, Evelyn, for preserving the family legacy. He thanked his fiancée, Celeste Arden, for bringing grace into a house burdened by history.

He did not mention Samuel.

The engagement gala had been arranged as more than a celebration. At midnight, Lucas planned to announce that Whitmore Holdings would merge with Arden Capital, transferring control of the family’s hotels, hospitals, and real-estate trusts into a new structure. The ballroom guests believed the documents were ready. The board believed Samuel remained under permanent guardianship at a private rehabilitation residence outside Chicago.

Only Lucas and Evelyn knew the guardianship petition rested on lies.

A year earlier, Samuel suffered a minor stroke during a board meeting. He recovered quickly, but Evelyn saw opportunity in confusion. She persuaded a compliant physician to describe temporary speech difficulty as progressive cognitive decline. Lucas presented himself as the devoted grandson forced to protect an aging founder from reckless decisions.

The court granted emergency control.

Samuel was moved out of the mansion before he could challenge the order. His phone disappeared. His longtime staff were dismissed. The east garden was locked. The family press office released a statement about privacy and dignity.

Then Samuel vanished from public memory with remarkable speed.

Lucas enjoyed that part most.

He replaced his grandfather’s dark suits with cream and ivory, as if brightness could become authority. He held meetings in Samuel’s study. He gave tours of the mansion and referred to renovations that had not yet been approved. He ordered Eleanor’s portrait moved to storage because, he said, grief made investors uncomfortable.

But the gala had one problem.

Marcus Reed had stopped answering Evelyn’s calls.

The family attorney had served Samuel for twenty-seven years. Two weeks earlier, Marcus requested original medical records, old trust documents, and security footage from the night Samuel was taken away.

Lucas told himself it was routine.

Yet as florists arranged white roses near the staircase, he noticed one elderly worker among them. Gray shirt. White hair. Familiar shoulders.

Samuel lifted his face.

Their eyes met.

Lucas’s rehearsed gratitude disappeared.
