Chapter 14 - The Doctor Who Lied

Dr. Colin Voss arrived before the police.

Lucas had called him during the confusion, hoping for reinforcement. Voss entered through the side corridor carrying a leather case and the confidence of a man accustomed to being believed because his title arrived before his ethics.

He stopped when he saw Dr. Park.

Then Marcus.

Then Samuel standing.

“Mr. Whitmore,” Voss said carefully. “You should not be under this stress.”

Samuel almost admired the instinct. Even exposed, the doctor attempted diagnosis.

Dr. Park asked him to explain the medication levels. Voss cited agitation. Marcus asked for incident reports. Voss referred to confidentiality. Arthur asked why his consulting company received money from Whitmore Holdings. Voss called it unrelated advisory work.

Then Clara Mendoza entered.

She wore a simple navy dress and carried copies of the medication logs. Voss’s confidence finally cracked.

Clara described being ordered to administer sedatives before family visits. When she refused, her schedule was changed. She recorded one conversation in which Voss said, “The court only needs consistency, not recovery.”

No recording was played publicly; Marcus confirmed it had already been filed with the court.

Voss turned toward Evelyn.

“You approved every treatment.”

Evelyn stared at him.

Lucas stood abruptly. “Nobody speaks without counsel.”

Samuel looked at his grandson.

“That advice arrived late.”

Authorities entered through the front doors where Marcus had entered earlier. No handcuffs were displayed in the ballroom. No dramatic struggle followed. Voss was escorted to a separate room for questioning. Evelyn and Lucas were informed they could not leave pending interviews concerning financial fraud and elder abuse.

Samuel watched without satisfaction.

Justice, he discovered, did not feel like victory when the accused carried your blood.

Clara approached him.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t get you out sooner.”

Samuel took her hand.

“You believed me before believing was safe.”

Across the foyer, the crushed roses were being gathered into a crystal bowl.

Broken did not mean worthless.

It meant someone had to decide whether to throw them away or let them testify.
