Lucas’s Last Speech

Chapter 16 - Lucas’s Last Speech
Lucas asked to address the room before leaving with investigators.
He stood where he had planned to announce the merger, ivory suit stained at one cuff from the roses and Samuel’s fall. Without music, applause, or Celeste beside him, he looked younger and less impressive.
“I know what everyone thinks,” he began.
Samuel replied, “Then say what you know.”
Lucas looked at the board.
He spoke about growing up inside the Whitmore name. Teachers assumed he would succeed. Friends wanted access. Every mistake became family news. Samuel’s approval felt impossible to earn because Samuel praised workers who struggled more than heirs who excelled.
“I was taught this would all be mine,” Lucas said.
“No,” Samuel answered. “You were taught you might be trusted with it.”
Lucas flinched.
He blamed Evelyn. Arden Capital. The board’s impatience. Samuel’s refusal to retire. He admitted the merger fees but claimed he intended to rebuild the company afterward. Each confession arrived attached to an excuse.
Then Celeste stood.
“You pushed an old man to the floor.”
The room fell quiet.
All the financial language collapsed around that simple act.
Lucas looked toward Samuel.
For one second, remorse appeared.
Then fear overtook it.
“If you destroy me, the family becomes a scandal.”
Samuel leaned on his cane.
“You made a scandal. Consequence only gives it a name.”
Lucas’s final defense vanished.
He was escorted toward the doors. At the threshold, he turned back, perhaps expecting Samuel to stop them. Samuel did not.
The same front doors that admitted Marcus and restored truth now opened for Lucas’s departure.
He walked through without applause.
Celeste removed the engagement ring from the table and placed it in a small envelope for her attorney.
The gala musicians quietly packed their instruments.

The cake remained untouched.
A celebration built on theft ended before the first toast.
