The Founder In Work Clothes

Chapter 03 - The Founder In Work Clothes

Samuel had not chosen the gray work shirt as a disguise.

It was the only clean shirt at the cottage.

After the court placed him under guardianship, the private residence controlled every visitor, call, meal, and document. Lucas called it rehabilitation. Samuel called it a well-furnished prison. The windows opened only four inches. Staff referred questions to Evelyn. His medication changed twice without explanation.

Then Clara Mendoza arrived.

Clara was a night nurse with a careful voice and a habit of reading charts twice. She noticed that Samuel’s confusion appeared only after certain pills. She noticed his speech improved on mornings when he refused them. Most important, she listened when he said the diagnosis was wrong.

With Marcus’s help, Clara arranged an independent evaluation. Samuel was moved quietly to a cottage owned by an old Whitmore trust the family had forgotten. There he regained strength, reviewed documents, and waited for the court.

Waiting hurt more than illness.

He watched news clips of Lucas seated in his office. He saw Eleanor’s memorial foundation renamed. He learned that workers who had served the family for decades were replaced because they remembered how Samuel ran the house.

On the morning of the gala, Marcus called.

“The judge signed the order,” he said. “Your authority is restored.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

Marcus offered to send a car and security team.

Samuel refused.

He went first to the east garden.

The gate had been chained, but the old gardener, Mr. Hayes, still carried a key. Together they cut twenty white roses from Eleanor’s favorite row. Samuel wrapped them in plain paper and walked toward the mansion through the service lane.

He wanted to place them beneath her portrait before confronting anyone.

At the side entrance, a temporary guard told him delivery workers were required to use the basement. Samuel looked through the tall glass doors and saw Eleanor’s portrait was gone.

That decided it.

He walked around to the front.

The gray shirt did not make him less of a founder. The dirt on his boots did not erase six decades of work. But wealth teaches people to recognize uniforms before faces.

Guests saw a gardener.

Lucas saw a threat.

Samuel saw his own front door.

And he opened it.
