The Woman with the Wineglass

Chapter 12 - The Woman with the Wineglass

Vivienne requested a private meeting with Rachel.

Maya advised against it.

Rachel agreed with cameras and attorneys present.

Vivienne entered the federal interview room wearing the same cream blouse she wore on the night of the steak dinner.

Perhaps it was deliberate.

Perhaps it was the only armor she still understood.

“You are enjoying this,” Vivienne said.

Rachel looked at her bandaged hand.

“No.”

“You always wanted Nathan separated from his family.”

“I wanted him to stop hurting me.”

Vivienne dismissed the sentence with a small movement of her fingers.

“He has a temper. Men under pressure do.”

“You watched.”

“I was trying to keep the evening from becoming chaotic.”

“You told me to stop making noise.”

Vivienne’s face tightened.

She claimed Graham’s share transfer was necessary because his judgment had become erratic. She insisted Lantern began as a legitimate security project corrupted by employees.

Rachel placed a still image from the workshop video on the table.

Vivienne holding Graham’s phone.

“You delayed the ambulance.”

“Seven minutes.”

“Seven minutes while he was unconscious.”

“He had signed the transfer.”

The answer arrived too quickly.

Vivienne realized the admission after speaking.

Rachel understood something then.

Vivienne did not think of herself as cruel.

She thought consequences were clerical details attached to necessary decisions.

Pain became acceptable when it protected the family.

“I spent forty years building that company beside Graham,” Vivienne said. “Laura would have dismantled it. Nathan would have lost everything.”

“So you chose the company.”

“I chose all of us.”

“No. You chose the version of the family that obeyed you.”

Vivienne offered evidence against Colin and Brooke in exchange for leniency.

She did not offer evidence against Nathan.

Rachel noticed.

“Even now, you protect him.”

“He is my son.”

“Laura is your daughter.”

Vivienne looked away.

That silence revealed the hierarchy.

Nathan inherited power.

Laura inherited blame.

Rachel had married into a family that called both arrangements love.

Before the meeting ended, Vivienne asked whether Rachel would support Nathan if he entered treatment.

“No.”

“You took vows.”

“So did he.”

Vivienne leaned back.

May you like

The wineglass was gone.

Without it, her hands trembled.
