The Board Without a Sterling

Chapter 14 - The Board Without a Sterling
The receiver held Sterling Domestic Technologies’ first independent board meeting in forty-one years.
No Sterling relative sat at the table.
Laura attended as a technical witness, not an executive. Rachel represented the restitution trust for one transitional vote.
The company faced three options.
Liquidation.
Sale to Halcyon Security.
Or reconstruction as a privacy-focused public-benefit corporation.
Halcyon offered the highest immediate payment. The sale would fund customer settlements but preserve much of Lantern’s technology under another name.
Rachel opposed it.
“Technology designed to exploit vulnerability cannot become safe through branding,” she said.
Investors argued that shutting down Lantern’s predictive models would destroy value.
Laura answered.
“Some value should be destroyed.”
The reconstruction plan divided Sterling’s legitimate assets. Home safety devices would continue under independent oversight. Surveillance products would require local-only storage by default. Customers would receive physical recording indicators that could not be disabled remotely.
Blue Unit 7 became the model.
Its most controversial feature—the visible blue light—became mandatory.
No hidden recording.
No silent override.
No executive access.
The board approved the plan narrowly.
The family name was removed.
The new company became Beacon Home Ethics.
Graham’s patents transferred into a public-interest trust. Employee pensions were protected before investor recovery. A compensation fund was created for Lantern victims.
Rachel declined a permanent board seat.
Laura accepted a two-year role overseeing ethical redesign, subject to independent review.
She did not reclaim the company as an inheritance.
She returned as an engineer with boundaries.
At the end of the meeting, the receiver placed Blue Unit 7 on the table.
The casing was scratched where Nathan kicked it.
Its light remained off.
Laura smiled.
“It looks unimpressive.”
May you like
Rachel looked at her healing hand.
“So did the truth.”
