The Marriage Contract

Chapter 08 - The Marriage Contract

Nathan filed for emergency guardianship over Rachel.

He claimed the burn resulted from self-harm during a psychotic episode. He submitted statements from Vivienne, the family physician, and two dinner guests who heard Rachel crying before entering the dining room.

The petition requested control over Rachel’s medical decisions, finances, and legal communications.

Maya read it without surprise.

“They used this on Laura.”

Rachel stared at Nathan’s signature.

“When did he prepare it?”

Metadata showed the draft existed six weeks before the steak dinner.

The burn had not created the plan.

It supplied the injury Nathan hoped to reinterpret.

Rachel and Nathan had signed a prenuptial agreement. She believed it protected the modest inheritance left by her parents. A hidden schedule connected that inheritance to Sterling shares Graham transferred to her as a wedding gift.

If Rachel were declared incapacitated, Nathan would vote those shares.

The Halcyon merger required them.

Maya found another clause.

If Rachel died or permanently lost capacity before the fifth wedding anniversary, her shares reverted to the Sterling Family Trust.

Their anniversary was twelve days away.

Rachel felt physically ill.

“Did he marry me for the shares?”

“Possibly not at first,” Maya said. “But someone wrote this agreement expecting your capacity to become negotiable.”

Rachel remembered Graham insisting she use independent counsel before marriage. That lawyer later died, and the original draft disappeared.

The final version had been substituted at signing.

The forged schedule carried Rachel’s initials copied from another page.

The guardianship hearing became the family’s first major legal defeat.

Maya played the kitchen video.

Nathan’s attorney argued it had been manipulated.

The court-appointed expert confirmed the file’s integrity.

The physician who treated Rachel testified that the injury was consistent with forced contact, not accidental brushing.

Laura testified about her own guardianship.

The judge denied Nathan’s petition and referred the forged documents for investigation.

Outside court, reporters shouted questions.

Rachel held up her bandaged hand.

“This injury is not proof that I cannot control my life,” she said. “It is proof that someone tried.”

The sentence spread across the news.

Sterling’s board postponed the merger indefinitely.

Vivienne called an emergency family meeting.

Nathan’s younger brother, Colin, and cousin, Brooke, publicly defended him. They called Rachel vindictive and Laura unstable.

The entire family chose a side before seeing the archive.

That choice would cost them more than the company.
