The Room Behind the Wine Cellar

Chapter 05 - The Room Behind the Wine Cellar

Graham’s hidden archive was not in the workshop.

It was behind the mansion’s wine cellar.

The architecture plans showed a ventilation space too large for its stated purpose. Laura believed Graham converted it into a server room during renovations.

They returned to the mansion after midnight.

Nathan had taken sleeping medication after drinking heavily. Vivienne remained in the guest wing. Laura knew the alarm codes because Graham never changed the original engineering override.

Rachel’s hand throbbed beneath its dressing.

Every instinct told her to leave the house permanently.

Another voice, quieter and more dangerous, told her to understand what she was leaving.

The wine cellar smelled of cedar and cold stone. Laura removed three bottles from a lower rack and pressed a hidden latch.

A narrow panel opened.

Behind it was a steel door with no visible handle.

Rachel removed the brass bird from her locket and inserted its metal tail into a small slot.

The door unlocked.

Blue lights illuminated one row at a time.

The hidden room contained servers, hard drives, and seven docking stations labeled UNIT 1 through UNIT 7. Only the seventh showed activity.

A monitor awakened.

GRAHAM STERLING PRIVATE ETHICS ARCHIVE

Two authentication prompts appeared.

Laura entered a long code.

Rachel inserted the brass key.

The archive opened.

Unit 7 had uploaded a file at 7:43 p.m.

The kitchen video began with Rachel standing over the stove. It captured Nathan throwing the plate, grabbing her wrist, and forcing her hand against the pan handle.

Vivienne’s voice was clear.

Stop making that noise. The guests will hear.

Rachel watched herself collapse.

She wanted to look away.

Laura stopped her.

“You do not have to watch.”

“Yes, I do.”

Not because she doubted the event.

Because Nathan would.

The archive contained more than one clip.

Unit 7 had recorded intermittent footage over three years whenever its emergency triggers activated.

In one video, Nathan shoved Rachel against the pantry after she questioned a missing bank transfer.

In another, Vivienne instructed a company physician to describe Laura as delusional.

A third showed Graham arguing with Nathan about illegal customer surveillance.

“You turned people’s homes into data mines,” Graham said.

Nathan answered, “We gave the market what it wanted.”

“You gave predators a catalog.”

The final folder was dated the night Graham died.

Rachel moved the cursor toward it.

A sound came from the wine cellar.

Glass touching wood.

Laura turned off the monitor.

Through the narrow gap beneath the steel door, a shadow crossed the floor.

Someone had entered the cellar.

Then Nathan’s voice said, “Rachel?”
