Vivienne Without the Mansion

Chapter 18 - Vivienne Without the Mansion
Three years into her sentence, Vivienne requested restorative mediation.
Rachel declined.
Laura accepted.
She met her mother through a secure video connection with a mediator present.
Vivienne looked older. Prison had removed the staff, tailoring, and architecture that once translated her authority into fact.
“I protected Nathan because Graham always preferred you,” she told Laura.
Laura almost laughed.
“Dad removed me from meetings when I challenged him.”
“He respected your mind.”
“That is not the same as protecting me.”
Vivienne admitted she resented Laura’s independence and feared Nathan’s insecurity. She believed giving him power would stabilize him.
Instead, power removed the consequences that might have forced him to change.
“Did you love me?” Laura asked.
Vivienne began to answer quickly, then stopped.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you help call me insane?”
“Because you would not stop.”
Laura looked directly at the screen.
“That is the answer.”
Vivienne’s love ended where obedience ended.
The mediation produced no reunion.
It produced accuracy.
Laura left feeling lighter, not because her mother changed, but because she no longer needed a different answer.
Rachel waited outside the facility.
They drove home without discussing Vivienne until Laura said, “She still thinks the tragedy is that we misunderstood her.”
Rachel smiled sadly.
“Some people apologize for the audience, not the action.”

Laura looked out the window.
“The blue light understood perfectly.”
