The Birth Plan

Chapter 16 - The Birth Plan

Labor began on the highway.

The medical transport turned toward the nearest hospital, but Hannah refused after learning it belonged to a company partially owned by Julian’s investment group.

Dr. Hale coordinated an emergency return to St. Catherine’s by helicopter.

Arthur remained with Catherine in Vermont. Hannah told him to stay.

“You missed thirty years,” she said. “Don’t miss the first hour she chooses to give you.”

At St. Catherine’s, Naomi activated the protected birth plan.

No electronic orders would be accepted without verbal confirmation. The baby’s identification bracelets would be printed in the delivery room. Two independent nurses would witness every sample, signature, and transfer.

Nora stationed federal agents outside the maternity floor.

Blair was in custody. Julian was in custody. Evan had surrendered his credentials.

Still, someone attempted to enter the floor using Dr. Hale’s badge.

Security stopped a contract administrator carrying a refrigerated specimen case and a forged court order claiming the newborn required immediate genetic isolation.

The administrator confessed that Blair had paid him weeks earlier.

The plan had been prepared in advance.

Hannah heard the news between contractions.

“They never expected to stop,” she said.

Naomi held her hand. “Neither did we.”

Labor became difficult but remained safe. Dr. Hale recommended surgery when the baby’s heart rate dropped.

Hannah signed the consent herself.

Evan arrived at the security checkpoint after hearing she was in labor. He asked to see her.

Nora carried the request inside.

Hannah considered it.

Then she said no.

The refusal was not punishment. She needed the room free of every person who had taught her to doubt her own judgment.

Before surgery, Naomi placed Catherine’s silver bracelet in a sealed bag beside Hannah’s bed.

“Ready?” Dr. Hale asked.

Hannah looked at the ceiling lights.

On the marble floor, she had been treated like a woman whose reality could be rewritten by whoever spoke louder.

Now every person in the room waited for her answer.

“Yes.”

Her daughter was born at 2:08 a.m.

The exact time recorded beside C-47 in the old nursery ledger.

The coincidence moved Naomi to tears.

The baby cried before anyone else did.

Hannah named her Catherine Margaret Reed.

Not Vale.

When the nurse fastened the identification bracelet, Nora received an alert from the trust administrator.

A direct descendant of Catherine Vale had been verified.

The control clause had activated.

Hannah now held the deciding vote over St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

And every person who had tried to take her child had accidentally completed the proof they feared.
