The Missing Camera

Chapter 04 - The Missing Camera

Naomi’s video lasted eleven seconds.

It did not show the entire confrontation, but it showed enough: Blair blocking Hannah’s path, tipping water onto the marble, and sliding the glass with her shoe. Hannah stepped back, lost her balance, and fell.

Evan entered four seconds later.

The recording ended just before he offered Blair his hand.

Hannah watched it twice without speaking.

Naomi mistook her silence for disappointment. “I’m sorry I didn’t capture more.”

“You captured the lie.”

Arthur’s attorney, Nora Bennett, copied the file to three secure drives. Arthur ordered the hospital server logs preserved and contacted an outside cybersecurity firm.

Within an hour, they discovered that the corridor camera had not malfunctioned. Someone had entered the security system using Evan’s executive credentials eleven minutes after the fall.

Evan denied it.

“My login is used by my office staff,” he said through the closed suite door.

Arthur finally allowed him inside, but only with Nora present.

Evan looked exhausted. Blair was no longer with him.

“Hannah, I made a terrible mistake in the hallway.”

“You made it before the hallway.”

“I believed Blair. She said you threatened her.”

“And that made it acceptable to leave your pregnant wife on the floor?”

His face tightened. “I panicked.”

“No. Panic is reaching for the wrong door during a fire. You reached for the woman you wanted to protect.”

Arthur stood by the window, saying nothing.

Evan glanced at him. “Dad, this is being manipulated.”

Arthur’s reply was cold. “Then explain the deleted camera footage.”

“I didn’t delete anything.”

“Your credentials did.”

Evan turned to Hannah. “Blair has access to my assistant’s system.”

Hannah almost admired the speed of his betrayal. He had defended Blair in public and abandoned her in private the moment evidence appeared.

Nora placed a second document on the table.

It was a prenatal laboratory report claiming that Hannah’s baby was not genetically related to Evan.

Hannah stared at the signature at the bottom.

Dr. Marcus Hale.

“That test was never performed,” she said.

Evan’s eyes shifted away.

Arthur noticed.

“What did Blair tell you?” Hannah asked.

Evan sat down slowly.

“She said there was proof.”

“And you believed her.”

“She showed me this.”

Hannah picked up the report.

The date was three days before the embryo transfer that had resulted in her pregnancy.

The mistake was small, almost invisible.

But Hannah had spent years auditing people who assumed grief made others stupid.

She looked at Nora.

“This document proves someone planned the paternity lie before I was even pregnant.”

Evan closed his eyes.

Arthur stepped toward him.

“What exactly were you planning to do after the baby was born?”

Evan did not answer.

That was answer enough.
