The Man Who Signed

Chapter 08 - The Man Who Signed

The board called an emergency meeting.

Evan arrived with two attorneys and the expression of a man still convinced that money could negotiate with consequences.

Blair did not attend. She claimed illness.

Arthur placed the guardianship petition, the forged paternity report, and the archive photograph before the directors.

Several board members looked at Evan with genuine surprise. Others avoided his eyes.

Hannah recognized the difference.

Surprise belonged to those who had not known.

Avoidance belonged to those who had known enough.

Evan’s attorney argued that the documents were preliminary and legally meaningless. He said Blair acted independently and exploited Evan’s concern for his unborn child.

Hannah asked one question.

“Who paid the private investigator?”

The attorney objected.

Arthur overruled him.

Evan admitted that hospital funds had covered the investigation through a consulting account.

“Then the hospital investigated my bloodline before I married you,” Hannah said.

“I authorized background research because of the trust.”

“So the proposal came after confirmation.”

Evan shook his head. “I loved you before I knew.”

“But you married me after you knew.”

That distinction silenced the room.

The board voted to suspend Evan and Blair pending criminal review.

Before the vote became final, Evan asked to speak privately with Hannah.

She agreed only because Nora remained in the room.

Evan stood by the window, his shoulders collapsed.

“Blair told me Arthur planned to give everything to Catherine’s heir,” he said. “She said I would lose the hospital, the foundation, everything my mother built.”

“Your mother wrote the trust.”

“She didn’t know you.”

“She knew enough to protect someone from you.”

He flinched.

Then he revealed the first truth that helped her.

Blair had blackmailed him.

Two years earlier, Evan moved eight million dollars from a pediatric research account to cover losses in a risky hospital expansion. He intended to return it. Blair discovered the transfer and offered to hide it.

In exchange, she gained access to executive systems, board communications, and eventually Evan.

“What did she want?” Hannah asked.

“At first, a promotion. Then the trust.”

“How?”

“If you were ruled incompetent after the birth, I would control your shares. Blair wanted me to transfer voting rights to a management company she created.”

Nora wrote down the company name.

Hannah looked at Evan.

“You were willing to steal my life because you were afraid of losing your building.”

Evan’s eyes filled.

“I thought I could control her.”

May you like

Hannah’s voice remained steady.

“No. You thought you could control me.”
