The Nursery Ledger

Chapter 09 - The Nursery Ledger

The old nursery ledger was found behind a false panel in the records archive.

Its pages listed infants by bracelet number, birth weight, time of delivery, and maternal code. Most entries matched the official database.

Three did not.

C-47 appeared beside a baby girl delivered at 2:08 a.m. The mother’s name had been erased, but indentations remained in the paper.

A forensic technician recovered the original writing.

CATHERINE VALE.

A second entry, M-12, listed another baby girl born forty minutes later to Linda Monroe.

The official records claimed Linda’s infant died before sunrise.

The handwritten ledger showed both babies discharged alive.

One was transferred with Catherine to an unnamed residential facility.

The other left with Linda.

Hannah stared at Blair’s date of birth on her phone.

It was the same day.

Arthur gripped the table.

“Blair and Hannah were born here hours apart,” Nora said.

Naomi whispered, “Then which baby went home with Linda?”

The answer seemed obvious, but Hannah refused to accept it without evidence.

DNA samples were ordered.

Blair’s attorney tried to block the test, arguing that family speculation was harassment. The court allowed investigators to compare discarded material collected under warrant from Blair’s office.

The preliminary results arrived the next evening.

Hannah was Catherine’s biological daughter.

Blair was Linda Monroe’s biological daughter.

There had been no infant switch between them.

But the ledger revealed a different crime.

Linda had falsely declared her own newborn dead, then used the dead identity to move Catherine and Hannah out of the hospital without triggering a missing-child alert. Linda later reclaimed Blair under a second certificate.

She had created one dead baby on paper and two living people without reliable records.

“Why?” Hannah asked.

Arthur looked at the payment ledger.

“Money.”

A private adoption broker had paid Linda two hundred thousand dollars that week. Yet no adoption had occurred. Catherine kept Hannah.

Nora believed Catherine had discovered the scheme and threatened exposure. Linda arranged her removal, but Catherine escaped the intended adoption transfer and disappeared with her child.

That explained the moves, the fear, and the changed names.

It did not explain how Blair knew so much.

Naomi found the answer in a deleted voicemail restored from Evan’s phone.

Linda’s voice spoke through static.

Your father failed to finish what he started. Do not let Catherine’s girl take the hospital now.

Blair replied, “Arthur isn’t the problem. The husband is.”

The recording ended.

Arthur looked at Evan.

“Your wife was a target before she met you.”

Evan lowered his head.

Hannah felt the baby move again.

She had spent years believing her mother ran because she was weak.

The ledger proved Catherine ran because she refused to sell her child.
