Chapter 17 - The Baby with Two Names

The next morning, headlines called the case the St. Catherine’s Identity Conspiracy.

Hannah ignored them.

She held her daughter beside the window while Naomi explained the feeding schedule. For several hours, the outside world became small enough to manage.

Then Arthur arrived with Catherine.

Catherine stopped at the doorway.

She had not entered a maternity ward since 1994.

Hannah waited.

No one pulled her forward.

After a minute, Catherine crossed the threshold and looked at the baby named for her.

“She has your chin,” Catherine said.

Arthur laughed through tears. “She has your timing.”

The reunion was gentle because no one demanded that it become perfect.

Catherine remembered some things and lost others. She called Hannah by the roommate’s name once, then apologized. Hannah told her not to.

Memory had been used against both of them long enough.

Nora arrived with legal documents.

The baby’s birth certificate listed Hannah as mother and left no ambiguity about identity. Evan remained the biological father, but his access would be determined by family court because of the guardianship conspiracy.

Hannah felt sadness, not triumph.

Her daughter deserved a father who had not treated paternity as a reason to grant or withdraw love.

Evan sent a letter.

He did not ask forgiveness. He admitted that his fear of losing status became more important than protecting his family. He promised to cooperate with every investigation and accept whatever contact the court allowed.

Hannah placed the letter in a drawer.

One day, Catherine Margaret might read it.

Today, she needed milk.

That afternoon, Blair requested a meeting in exchange for information about Margaret Vale’s death.

Hannah declined to attend.

Arthur went with federal agents.

Blair revealed that Julian had preserved a recording made by Margaret shortly before the fatal crash. It was stored inside a safe-deposit box controlled by Bright Tomorrow.

The recording showed Margaret confronting Julian about Catherine’s detention. She threatened to expose the adoption network and transfer the hospital to a public trust.

Julian warned her that accidents happened to distracted drivers.

The footage ended.

It was enough to reopen Margaret’s death as murder.

Blair expected the information to buy freedom.

It bought only a recommendation for a reduced sentence.

When she heard that Hannah had named the baby Catherine Margaret Reed, Blair reportedly laughed once and then began to cry.

The two women had been born in the same hospital hours apart.
