The Board Meeting

Chapter 13 - The Board Meeting

The ballroom looked different without music and gowns. Broken pastries had been cleared away, but a pale stain remained on the carpet where Lily’s cupcake landed.

The Cross Hospitality board assembled at a long table beneath the chandeliers. Lawyers, federal observers, and selected journalists waited along the walls. Evelyn sat at the head. Claire entered through a side door and took a seat beside Detective Ortiz.

Julian appeared on the central screen from an undisclosed location. He wore a dark suit and the expression of a man attending someone else’s funeral.

“My grandmother has been manipulated,” he began. “A former employee exploited a family tragedy to steal confidential records.”

Claire watched the camera mounted above the screen. Its red light glowed.

Evelyn spoke calmly. “You are asking the board to remove me?”

“For the protection of the company.”

“And appoint you chairman?”

“Temporarily.”

A director called for a vote.

Before hands could rise, every chandelier dimmed.

The projection screen went black.

Julian’s face vanished.

Noah appeared.

The video had been recorded in B-17 three years earlier. He explained the foundation theft, the surveillance network, and the blackmail operation. Documents filled the side screens. Bank transfers, hotel room numbers, access logs, and names appeared in sequence.

Gasps spread through the room.

Then the footage changed to the night of the gala. Julian knocked over the dessert stand. Adrian planted the bracelet. Celeste edited the file. Each act replayed from multiple camera angles.

Julian’s voice came through the speakers from a hidden audio channel.

“Cut the feed!”

No one obeyed.

A final live window opened. It showed Julian in a warehouse near the East River, shouting at technicians. His secure video had been carrying location metadata into Noah’s system.

Ortiz gave the address to tactical officers.

Julian realized he had been exposed. His face returned to the main screen.

“You have no idea what you are releasing,” he said. “Some of these people run the country.”

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Then perhaps the country should know how they are run.”

The board voted unanimously to remove Julian from every position. Evelyn resigned immediately afterward, accepting responsibility for years of silence.

Claire expected triumph. Instead, she felt the sadness of watching a family empire collapse under truths that should have been faced much earlier.

On-screen, officers entered the warehouse.

Julian backed away, but Adrian appeared behind him with a gun. For one second it was unclear whether he intended to protect Julian or kill him.

A second figure stepped from the shadows.

Scarred cheek. Longer hair. Familiar posture.

Noah.

May you like

Claire stood so fast her chair fell.

The live feed cut to black.
