The Camera Remembers

Chapter 04 - The Camera Remembers
The lounge became a courtroom without a judge.
Julian stood between the two officers and described the missing bracelet in precise detail: antique diamonds, platinum setting, Cross family crest. Celeste appeared behind him and said she had seen Claire near Evelyn moments before the bracelet vanished.
Claire almost laughed at the neatness of it.
“You watched me protect my daughter,” she said. “You did not see me touch Evelyn.”
Celeste folded her hands. “I know what I saw.”
Officer Lena Ortiz, a compact woman with tired eyes, asked Claire to open her clutch. Claire did. Inside were her invitation, Lily’s glucose tablets, a lipstick, and her phone.
No bracelet.
Julian looked disappointed for less than a second.
“Her wrap,” he said.
Claire’s black silk wrap hung over the back of a chair. Ortiz lifted it carefully. Something heavy struck the carpet.
The diamond bracelet glittered between them.
Lily gasped. Claire did not. She looked directly at Celeste.
“You planted it.”
Celeste’s expression remained composed. “That is a serious accusation.”
“So is theft.”
Julian spread his hands toward the officers. “This woman has resented my family for years. She came here under false pretenses, created a disturbance, and stole from an elderly guest.”
Evelyn stepped forward. “I am not filing a complaint.”
Julian turned to her. “The foundation must protect its donors.”
“I said no.”
“Grandmother, you are upset.”
“I am lucid enough to recognize a performance.”
Ortiz looked from Evelyn to Claire. “The item was found in Mrs. Bennett’s property. I need to document what happened, but no one is being arrested until I review available footage.”
Marcus lifted the tablet. “Camera twelve covers the relevant area.”
He replayed the cupcake incident first. Julian’s lie collapsed in silence. Several hotel staff members, now gathered in the hallway, watched him hit the display.
Julian’s face tightened. “That proves nothing about the bracelet.”
Marcus scrubbed through the footage. Evelyn entered. Celeste passed behind Claire. For one frame, her hand disappeared behind the chair holding the wrap.
Then the image jumped forward seventeen seconds.
Marcus froze.
“That section has been cut,” he said.
Julian’s confidence returned. “Or your equipment failed.”
“Our equipment does not remove seventeen seconds and reseal the file.”
Marcus checked the system log. An administrator account had accessed the camera from the executive office two minutes earlier.
Evelyn looked at Julian.
“Who has that password?”
Julian gave a helpless shrug. “Half the hotel, apparently.”
“No,” Marcus said. “Only four people.”
He listed them: himself, the general manager, Evelyn, and Julian.
The air changed.
Ortiz picked up the bracelet with a handkerchief. “I’ll have this checked for prints and fibers.”
Celeste stepped back.
Lily, who had been silent, pointed at the tablet.
“The man in the white gloves touched Mommy’s scarf.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“What man?” Ortiz asked.
“The waiter. He bumped me when the cakes fell. Then he put something in his pocket.”
Julian gave a dismissive sigh. “A frightened child is inventing details.”
Lily’s chin trembled, but she kept looking at the screen.
“He had a little gold bird on his sleeve.”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed. “That is not a waiter’s uniform. That is executive service.”
Only six employees wore that insignia. All reported directly to Celeste.
Marcus searched the staff list. One name had clocked out three minutes after the bracelet vanished.
Adrian Vale.

Claire knew the name. Adrian had been Noah’s junior analyst.
And according to the police report, Adrian had identified Noah’s body.
