The Dead Man’s Timeline

Chapter 06 - The Dead Man’s Timeline
Claire watched the footage again until the numbers lost meaning.
10:12. Julian and Celeste entered the archive.
10:14. Noah called Marcus.
10:16. Noah entered B-17.
10:36. Police later estimated the car left the mountain road.
10:41. Julian and Celeste exited the archive.
Noah never appeared again.
Marcus searched additional cameras, but most footage from that year had been erased. The old server preserved only the basement corridor because Noah had manually redirected it.
“He knew,” Claire said. “He knew they might come after him.”
Marcus zoomed in on the final frame before Noah entered. Noah glanced toward the camera and held up three fingers, then pointed downward.
“What does that mean?” Marcus asked.
Claire remembered a game they played with Lily. Three taps meant look beneath.
They searched under the desk and found a metal plate secured with three screws. Behind it rested a small black drive wrapped in plastic.
A label read: FOR CLAIRE—ONLY IF I FAIL.
Claire’s hands shook so badly Marcus had to connect it.
The drive contained financial ledgers, photographs of checks, recordings of board meetings, and a short video from Noah.
He appeared exhausted but alive, seated in his office.
“Claire, if you are seeing this, I was not able to come home,” he said. “Julian and Celeste have stolen more than forty million dollars from programs meant to feed children. The theft is protected by a private intelligence network built through the hotels. They record donors, politicians, and judges, then use the material as leverage.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Noah continued. “Do not trust official reports. Do not assume a body proves a death. The foundation’s medical contractor can alter records. Trust Marcus only if he tells you about the lighthouse.”
Marcus went still.
Claire turned. “What lighthouse?”
He swallowed. “The night before your wedding, Noah and I got stranded near Cape Mercy. We promised never to tell anyone because we broke into the lighthouse to escape the storm. No one else knew.”
On the video, Noah leaned closer to the camera.
“The master ledger is not on this drive. This is enough to expose theft, but not enough to identify everyone involved. The master ledger is hidden in the place where a child can reach what an adult overlooks.”
The recording ended.
A noise sounded outside B-17.
Marcus closed the laptop. Footsteps approached quickly.
The door handle moved.
He switched off the monitor and pulled Claire behind a server rack. A beam of light cut through the darkness. Adrian Vale entered wearing hotel maintenance clothes.
He crossed directly to the desk and checked beneath it.
When he found the empty compartment, he cursed.
Claire felt Marcus tense beside her. Adrian drew a compact pistol fitted with a suppressor. He did not look like an analyst anymore.
A radio crackled at his waist.
Celeste’s voice came through. “Do you have it?”
“Someone got here first.”
“Then find them.”
Adrian moved deeper into the room.
Claire glanced at the old server’s glowing red light. Beside it was a fire suppression switch. She reached across the narrow gap and pulled it.
An alarm screamed. White vapor exploded from the ceiling. Adrian turned, blinded. Marcus tackled him into a rack while Claire grabbed the laptop and ran.
Adrian escaped through a secondary door before security arrived.

But he left behind his radio.
And Celeste’s voice was still transmitting.
