Julian’s Offer

Chapter 09 - Julian’s Offer

Marcus survived, but doctors placed him in a medically induced coma. The blow to his head had been precise. Whoever attacked him knew how to avoid the cameras and how to make murder resemble an accident.

Claire moved Lily to a protected apartment arranged by Detective Ortiz. Two officers stood outside at all times. Lily asked whether they were in trouble. Claire told her the truth in the simplest words she could find.

“Some powerful people stole from children. We found proof, and they are afraid.”

“Are they afraid of me?”

Claire thought of the cupcake, the red light, and the memory card beneath the table.

“Yes,” she said. “Because you noticed what adults missed.”

That evening, Julian called.

Claire almost refused, but Ortiz traced the line while she answered.

Julian’s voice was calm. “You have made your point.”

“My point is that you belong in prison.”

“You still think this is about money.”

“It is about children going hungry while you bought houses.”

“No, Claire. It is about systems. The people in my files are not innocent donors. They are senators, prosecutors, judges, executives. If the entire ledger becomes public, institutions collapse.”

“That is what blackmailers always say. They call their crimes stability.”

Julian laughed softly. “Noah said something similar.”

Claire gripped the phone. “Where is he?”

A pause.

“Dead, most likely.”

“Most likely?”

“He entered a game he did not understand.”

“You are going to tell me what happened.”

“I am going to offer you a future. Ten million dollars. A new identity. The best medical care for Lily. In return, you say the memory card was given to you by Marcus and you cannot verify it.”

Claire looked through the apartment doorway. Lily was drawing a picture of three people holding hands beneath a red circle.

“And if I refuse?”

“A family court receives the file from Route 9. Your daughter is removed while your fitness is investigated. The public learns that your husband stole foundation records. Marcus dies before waking. Evelyn is declared incompetent. Everyone you think you are protecting loses.”

“You already lost,” Claire said.

“No. I was embarrassed at a party. Do not confuse embarrassment with defeat.”

Claire heard a faint sound beneath his voice: a train horn, followed by bells.

Ortiz wrote on a pad: EAST RIVER FREIGHT YARD.

Claire kept him talking.

“You knocked down a tray of cupcakes because you saw Lily’s locket. Why?”

Julian’s breathing changed.

“That key belongs to my family.”

“Noah gave it to her.”

“He stole it.”

“From B-17?”

Silence.

Then Julian said, “Ask Evelyn what she promised Noah the night he died.”

The call ended.

Police searched the freight yard but found only a discarded phone.

Claire replayed Julian’s final sentence.

Evelyn had claimed she sent investigators after Noah’s death. She had not said whether she saw him before it.

Claire called her.

Evelyn answered on the first ring.

“I wondered when you would ask,” she said.
