The Steward

Chapter 16 - The Steward

Claire, Ortiz, Marcus, and Evelyn created a circle of trust small enough to fit around a kitchen table.

They fed false information to the compromised federal office: Noah would meet Claire at the Ashford Grand ballroom at midnight. Meanwhile, Marcus rerouted every camera through the obsolete B-17 system, which the Meridian Circle did not know remained active.

At 11:45, Claire stood alone beneath the chandeliers.

The room still carried echoes of the gala: Lily’s cry, Julian’s accusation, the fall of porcelain. Claire wore the same black dress. She wanted whoever came to understand that she was no longer the woman who had been cornered there.

At midnight, the doors opened.

Assistant Director Malcolm Voss entered with two agents. He was respected, decorated, and often quoted about institutional integrity.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he said, “you are in danger. Come with us.”

“Are you the Steward?”

Voss smiled sadly. “That name sounds theatrical.”

“So does a charity stealing food from children.”

He moved closer. “Julian was uncontrolled. We are not Julian. The Meridian Circle prevents chaos by ensuring powerful people remain predictable.”

“Through blackmail.”

“Through leverage.”

Claire touched the silver locket.

Voss’s eyes followed the movement. He still believed the key contained data.

“Noah is dead,” he said. “This time, I can promise accuracy.”

A side screen illuminated.

Voss appeared live, recorded from three angles.

Marcus’s voice came through the speakers. “Red lights remember.”

Voss’s agents turned their weapons toward the exits, but Ortiz stepped from the balcony with an independent state tactical team. She had bypassed federal channels entirely.

Voss did not panic. He laughed.

“You think recording me ends this?”

“No,” Claire said. “But it begins with your voice.”

She played an audio fragment from the boathouse camera. Voss had called the hidden van and ordered Noah captured alive. The number linked directly to his personal encrypted device.

Voss’s calm finally broke.

He lunged for Claire.

Before he reached her, a man emerged from behind the projection screen and struck him to the floor.

Noah Bennett stood beneath the chandelier.

For several seconds, no one moved.

His face carried the scar from the Montreal image. He was thinner, older, and bleeding through a bandage beneath his coat. But he was alive.

Claire crossed the distance and slapped him.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Then she pulled him into her arms.

Noah held her as though the world had ended and returned in the same breath.

Lily ran from the side corridor despite Marcus’s attempt to stop her.

“Daddy!”

Noah dropped to his knees.

The reunion was not graceful. It was tears, anger, disbelief, and three people holding each other too tightly.

Behind them, Voss was handcuffed.

Above them, camera twelve kept recording.

This time, it remembered a family coming back from the dead.
